Seeing Glass Differently: Bobcaygeon Branch Bird-Safe Upgrade
It’s for the birds (in a good way)
The Bobcaygeon Library Branch has officially become the first bird-safe building in the City of Kawartha Lakes, thanks to the installation of new bird-safe window treatments designed to help prevent bird collisions. The project marks an important step in protecting local wildlife and creating safer public spaces for migratory and resident bird species throughout the community.
The specialized polka dot window treatments work by making large glass surfaces visible to birds, which often cannot distinguish reflections in windows from open sky or natural habitat. The evenly spaced dot pattern helps birds recognize the glass as a barrier while still allowing natural light into the building and maintaining visibility for library visitors. Bird collisions with windows are one of the leading causes of bird deaths in urban areas, and simple measures such as these treatments can significantly reduce the risk.
The installation was made possible through a collaboration between the library, the City of Kawartha Lakes Building and Property Division, and Kawartha Lakes Bird Friendly. The project reflects the library’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community partnerships that make a positive local impact.
