Don't Let Summer Reading Take a Vacation
Summer vacation is a time for adventure, family, and making memories, but it's also when many children experience what's known as the "summer slide."
Also called summer learning loss or summer slump, the summer slide refers to the decline in academic skills that can happen during the break from school when children aren't regularly practising reading, writing, or math. In fact, many teachers spend the first four to six weeks of the new school year reviewing material students have forgotten over the summer.
The good news? Joining Summer Reading Club helps to prevent summer learning loss, and small, daily reading habits can make a big difference.
Why Reading Matters
One of the easiest and most effective ways to help kids stay on track during the school year is by encouraging them to read for just 15 minutes each day. A little reading goes a long way toward maintaining and even strengthening literacy skills over the summer months.
Reading doesn't have to feel like schoolwork. There are plenty of fun and engaging ways to build literacy into everyday life, including:
- Reading books together as a family.
- Listening to audiobooks while following along with a print copy.
- Visiting the library to discover new books and favourite authors.
- Playing word games or storytelling games.
- Reading recipes, maps, comics, magazines, or instructions together.
- Encouraging older children to explore books about topics they're already interested in.
Research shows that children who read for just 15 minutes a day over the summer return to school with stronger reading comprehension skills than those who do not read regularly.
Libraries are here to Help
Your local library is one of the best resources for keeping children engaged in reading all summer long. Public libraries offer free access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, and literacy programs for readers of every age and ability.
Summer Reading Club makes reading even more exciting by combining books with games, activities, prizes, and fun community events. We’ve designed it to encourage kids to read for fun while building confidence and developing lifelong reading habits.
Regular visits to the library also help establish positive routines that can continue well beyond the summer months.
Make Reading Part of Your Summer Adventure
Summer is a time for imagination, discovery, and fun, and reading can be part of that. Reading for just 15 minutes a day can help children maintain their literacy skills, discover new interests, and head back to school feeling confident and ready to learn.
