Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at the Library
Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day
The Kawartha Lakes Public Library is pleased to partner with Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes to offer a series of engaging, family-friendly programs focused on bird conservation and learning.
These events are presented in recognition of World Migratory Bird Day (May 9). A global campaign that raises awareness about migratory birds and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on during their long seasonal journeys. This partnership highlights simple, practical actions that help create safer, bird-friendly communities.
Drop-In Activities and Displays | May 9
On Saturday, May 9, visit the Lindsay and Kinmount branches to explore special lobby displays hosted by Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes.
Volunteers will be on site offering:
- helpful handouts
- practical bird conservation tips
- origami activities
- demonstrations on how to apply window collision tape
These small actions can help reduce bird collisions and protect migrating species.
The Library will also feature curated collections of books, kits, and resources so families can continue learning at home.
At the Lindsay branch, children and caregivers are invited to drop in and make a pinecone bird feeder, a hands-on activity that supports backyard birds.
Walk on the Wild Side: Swift Watch | June 4
The series continues on June 4 at 7:00 p.m. with Walk on the Wild Side: Swift Watch.
This evening program focuses on the chimney swift, a migratory bird that relies on urban roosting sites. The program begins with a short presentation in the library’s meeting room, followed by a guided walk through downtown Lindsay.
Participants will visit local roosting areas and watch as chimney swifts gather at dusk. This unique experience offers a closer look at a bird that travels thousands of kilometres each year.
It also reinforces an important message: protecting migratory birds is a shared responsibility that supports healthy ecosystems and communities.
