Celebrate Earth Day with the Library!
Learn, create, and share while supporting a greener community! We are proud to support environmental awareness and community engagement through a variety of upcoming events this Spring.
Seedy Saturday and Seed Library
On April 18, the Kinmount Friends & Garden Club will host their annual Seedy Saturday event, which also marks the launch of a new Seed Library at the Lindsay branch. Seed libraries allow residents to borrow and share seeds, helping gardeners try new varieties while supporting local biodiversity. This initiative is a great example of how the library connects people, knowledge, and sustainable practices.
Earth Day Activity and Challenge
From April 18 to April 22, all library branches will celebrate Earth Day. In partnership with CKL Waste Services, the library will distribute an Earth Day Challenge sheet with practical ways residents can make everyday choices a little greener. Participants who complete the challenge can enter a draw to win a reusable Yeti prize. Each package will also include an onion bag and instructions for creating a nesting-material bird station, providing birds with safe materials for building their nests.
Branches will also host a hands-on family activity where participants can design a garden marker and seed packet, then take home wildflower seeds to grow and help support pollinators. These activities reinforce the City of Kawartha Lakes’ commitments as a Bee City and certified Bird Friendly municipality, encouraging residents to plant pollinator-friendly species and engage in environmental stewardship.

A Sustainable Future with the Library
More broadly, the library plays an important role in sustainability. By sharing books, toys, and other materials, the library reduces consumption and encourages a circular economy, where resources are used by many people rather than purchased and discarded individually. Through partnerships with community groups, collaboration with municipal departments, and the everyday sharing of resources, the library continues to strengthen both our community and our environment.
