Opening the Past: Lindsay’s Millennium Time Capsule to be opened after 25 years
Back in 2000, during the big renovation of Queens Square and the Lindsay Millennium celebrations, a time capsule was placed here, and an eternal flame was lit. It was meant to capture the spirit of the community at the start of a brand-new millennium, the memories, hopes, and everyday life of the people of Lindsay.
The time capsule sits beneath the eternal flame, and as the pillar says, it is set to be opened in December 2025. At that time, Mayor Doug Elmslie will rededicate the flame to honour the history of Victoria County and to celebrate the continued growth of the communities across Kawartha Lakes.
“It will be both entertaining and exciting to observe the opening of the 2000 Time Capsule,” said Barb Truax. “It will tug on memories of an earlier time and possibly surprise us.” Barb was the Co-Chair, along with George Inrig, of the Lindsay Millennium Committee.
City of Kawartha Lakes would like to extend a huge thank-you to everyone involved: the Town of Lindsay Committee of Council’s Events Office for the Light Up Lindsay Committee, the Lindsay Millennium Committee, and all the dedicated people who helped make the time capsule and eternal flame possible.
Everyone who played a part in these projects is warmly invited to meet in front of the library at 9:30 am on December 16, 2025, to mark this special moment together, with the official opening of the time capsule at 10:00 am.
Items from the time capsule will be on display at the Lindsay Library Branch of the Kawartha Lakes Public Library later in the week, and we hope you will come take a look.
Please note: this event is weather-dependent.
