The Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for kids in grades 3 - 6. Children read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read. They will be matching wits with some of the best readers in the City!

Registration is now closed. Thank you for your interest. We hope that you can compete with us next year!

Important Dates

Registration Closes: Saturday March 19th

First Battle(s): Tuesday May 3rd (after school)

Semi-Finals: Thursday May 5th (after school)

Finals: Tuesday May 10th (after school)

Specific times will be coordinated with teams once registration closes.

Registration

Create a team, or register on your own and library staff will put you on a team.

Kids in grade 3 - 6 are welcome to participate. Each team can have 4 - 6 members on it.

*All team members must register individually. There will be a spot to note who else is registering from your team. Be sure to include first and last names so we can pair you with the correct team members.

Where Are The Competitions?

All competitions will be held virtually using Zoom this year. Check out the Important Dates information above to make sure that you are available for those dates. You will also need to make sure you have access to the Internet.

How Do You Prepare?

You are in charge of preparing for the big event! Make sure you read the books, learn the book titles and author names and practice. The library will facilitate three team meet ups prior to the event to help you prepare and communicate with your team.

All team meet-ups and Battle events will take place via Zoom. Please ensure that you have access to the Internet for the program.

Check out the Official Rules below to learn the logistics of how the Battles will work.

How Do You Play?

Teams compete to score points by identifying the title and author of books faster than the other team. 20 questions will be asked per round. Once the question has been asked, teams will have 20 seconds to provide an answer. In order to receive points for correct answers, the complete title needs to be provided (including subtitles).

Browse the list of Official Rules for more details.

All teams will be given the opportunity to participate in the first round of battles (check out the Important Dates information). Then, some teams will move on to the next round.

The Books

There are 10 books to read. It is up to you to decide how many books each member of your team reads. If you have time, you are encouraged to read them all.

Find the books in the catalogue by clicking here.

Are all the books currently checked out? Place a hold on the title, then check out your school library, local bookstore etc.

Some titles may be available by e-Book or e-Audiobook as well. Give cloudLibrary or hoopla a try. Find more information on these resources here.

Use this reading tracker to help you see what you've read.
